Bridging Countries: How an Australian Posting Shaped an Emirati’s Unique Museum

In the heart of Abu Dhabi lies a hidden gem – a private museum housing over 15,000 artifacts from more than 160 countries. But this is no ordinary museum. It’s the personal collection of Dr. Obaid Al Ketbi, a former UAE ambassador to Australia who has transformed his home into a cultural bridge between nations.

From Military Cadet to Global Diplomat

Al Ketbi’s journey began in 1976 when he joined the UAE Armed Forces as a cadet, graduating as a lieutenant in 1977. However, the foundations of his success were laid much earlier, shaped by the influence of his father, a former military man who joined the Abu Dhabi police in the early 1960s.

“My father was, you know, paying that attention to us to grow,” Al Ketbi recalls. “One day he can see his child joining [the military]. It was a happy day for him.”

This paternal guidance proved crucial during Al Ketbi’s early military training. When he considered quitting after a few months, his father’s words steered him back on course. “He said, ‘No, you never ever think about not continuing anything you started. You should finish this course and you will see the result in the end.’ And he was right.”

The Power of Discipline

Al Ketbi attributes much of his success to the discipline instilled by his father and reinforced throughout his career. “I advise people to have something in life, which mainly you have to be disciplined,” he emphasizes. “Disciplined in everything you do in life. You cannot succeed if you are not respecting what you have, and, or what you do.”

This disciplined approach enabled Al Ketbi to overcome significant challenges, including completing his high school diploma while serving as an officer. “It was a big challenge,” he recalls. “I had to study nine subjects in one year, working day and night.” This dedication paid off, leading to multiple degrees including two PhDs.

He shares that “The unwavering support and encouragement of family throughout my journey, have been instrumental in shaping my path.”

A Diplomatic Bridge Between Nations

Al Ketbi’s 43-year career spanned roles in the military, police force, and government, culminating in his appointment as UAE Ambassador to Australia from 2015-2018. This posting would prove transformative, both personally and professionally.

During his time in Australia, Al Ketbi was struck by the similarities between the two nations. “We have this multicultural relationship,” he notes. “Your country is very open, and UAE is the same.”

He found common ground in the strong emphasis on family, social life, and respect for business. These shared values helped strengthen ties between the countries and left a lasting impression on Al Ketbi.

From Diplomatic Career to Cultural Curator

Upon returning to the UAE, Al Ketbi channeled his passion for cultural exchange into creating a unique museum within his own home. What began as a family tradition of preserving memories has grown into an impressive collection spanning decades of personal, national, and international history.

The museum houses everything from childhood mementos to diplomatic gifts, each item telling a story of Al Ketbi’s journey and the UAE’s progress. One prized possession is a military hat gifted by an Australian colonel after a memorable encounter with kangaroos blocking their motorcade.

A Personal Touch to Cultural Diplomacy

Unlike traditional museums, Al Ketbi’s collection is deeply personal. Visitors are welcomed into his home, experiencing Emirati hospitality before touring the exhibits. This intimate setting allows for meaningful conversations and cultural exchange.

“I meant to have it at home,” Al Ketbi says. “We would like anyone visiting us to experience UAE hospitality.”

This strategy has struck a chord with visitors, often bringing them to tears through its raw openness and vulnerability. Al Ketbi shares touching stories of emotional reunions with those he’s assisted in the past. One notable example is a woman he aided as a refugee in Kosovo who later visited his museum, reminiscing about the UAE’s generous support to other nations and its unwavering commitment to global peace, tolerance, and humanitarian aid.

Bridging Cultures Through Shared History

While the museum primarily highlights Al Ketbi’s personal journey, it also delves into the rich history of the UAE since its founding in 1971. The exhibits feature prominent collectibles and documentation that narrate real stories, showcasing the leadership’s wisdom and investment in its people. This serves a greater purpose as a bridge between cultures. A dedicated “Australian corner” highlights his time as ambassador, giving visitors from Down Under a taste of home in the heart of Abu Dhabi.

The Power of Preserving Memories

For Al Ketbi, the museum is more than a collection of artifacts – it’s a powerful reminder of the importance of preserving one’s history, and an inspiration to new generations. He encourages visitors, especially younger generations, to value their personal journeys and cultural heritage.

“Don’t underestimate anything you get in front of you,” he advises. “Even a small gift from a friend, or something you bought or received – keep it, especially when it comes to family.”

This message has resonated with many visitors, including social media influencers who realize the value of tangible memories in an increasingly digital world.

Discipline as the Key to Success

Throughout his career and in his current role as a cultural ambassador, Al Ketbi continues to emphasize the importance of discipline. “If you want to succeed, you must be disciplined,” he states emphatically. This principle, instilled by his father and reinforced through his military career, remains a cornerstone of his approach to life and business.

“Success is measured by discipline, devotion to duty and faith,” Al Ketbi says.

Looking to the Future

As his museum gains international recognition, Al Ketbi is focused on modernizing and digitalizing the collection. He’s also exploring new business ventures to further strengthen ties between the UAE and Australia, always guided by the disciplined approach that has served him so well.

But at its core, the museum remains a labor of love – a testament to one man’s journey and the power of cultural diplomacy. In the words of UAE founder Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, which Al Ketbi often quotes: “He who does not know his past cannot make the best of his present and future, for it is from the past that we learn.”

Through his unique museum and unwavering commitment to discipline, Dr. Obaid Al Ketbi is ensuring that the lessons of the past continue to build bridges between nations for generations to come.
