How LANDMARK by Lexus transformed this year’s Melbourne Cup Carnival

Entertainment

The coveted Melbourne Cup Carnival is traditionally all about high fashion, thrilling races, and the iconic Birdcage. But this year, LANDMARK by Lexus, designed by Melbourne’s Brahman Perera, offered something a little different. Inspired by theatre and storytelling, Perera set out to make the three-storey pop-up venue feel anything but temporary.

Working with the theme of ‘Future Catalyst 35’ to celebrate 35 years of Lexus innovation and its future-forward commitment, Designer Brahman Perera says he approached this year’s pop-up pavilion with the care of a permanent installation, drawing on theatre to make it immersive and engaging.

“I wanted it to feel meaningful,” Perera tells Forbes Australia. “Not just something nice to look at, but something that people could actually connect with.” Perera brought the pavilion to life with dramatic visuals—drapery, Kvadrat textiles, and bold colours—all while keeping environmental impact minimal.

A multi-level experience

Level one was about fine dining. Chef Charlie Carrington designed an all-white dining space, inspired by Lexus’ zero-emission vision. “We wanted to take guests somewhere unexpected,” Carrington said. The decor was sustainably sourced, reflecting Lexus’ dedication to innovation and sustainability.

On level two, the energy kicked up a notch. The terrace offered panoramic views of the Flemington straight, while cocktail bars and staff in vibrant red uniforms kept things lively. Bold colours and dynamic design elements captured the thrill of the day, making it feel like a true celebration.

Level three was pure relaxation. Plush lounges, chocolate browns, and soft blue curtains set the mood. Level three was all about kicking back—plush lounges, stunning views, and total comfort. Bryce Heyworth’s floral arrangements added a natural, soft touch, blending perfectly with the luxe atmosphere.

A Feast for the senses

Floral artist Bryce Heyworth brought his signature touch—a sprawling floral meadow around the Lexus LF-ZC concept vehicle. The bold florals softened the futuristic lines of the concept car, creating a striking contrast.

“We needed a way to ground all this innovation with something organic,” Perera explained. Heyworth’s floral meadow did exactly that—softening the futuristic lines of the concept car.

Up on the top floor, guests found the Cicchetti Bar with Italian bites and St Remio coffee roasters serving up specialty brews—cold brew, iced coffee, and more. Guests could freshen up at the Lexus beauty bar on the ground floor, adding an extra touch of indulgence to the experience.

The guest list added some star power. Melbourne-born supermodel Abbey Lee was there with her father, along with Jessica Gomes, Kate Waterhouse, Melissa Leong, and racing legend Corey Brown.

“I love coming home to Melbourne, and being part of Derby Day for the first time is so special,” Abbey Lee said. “The work that goes into the pavilion each year is incredible. I can’t wait to see everyone’s style and the black-and-white theme.”

Guests got more than just a visual treat. Chef Charlie Carrington’s dishes on level one drew inspiration from Lexus’ commitment to innovation, using flavours from around the world to surprise and delight.

Tarts Anon founder Gareth Witton also made his mark on the pavilion, with his famous pastries adding an element of theatre. Presented on a spinning pedestal, the tarts turned simple desserts into something special, adding a playful touch to the experience.

“We wanted every part of it to be engaging,” Perera explained. “Even the stairwells were designed to be more than just a way to get from A to B—they were part of the experience.” Guests moved through mirrored stairwells and corridors lined with black carpets—spaces that were anything but ordinary. Perera wanted every corner of LANDMARK by Lexus to be worth exploring.
